"Living up to its title and the suitably BM cover art, the sophomore effort from the electronic doom duo Necro Deathmort looks to the darker shades of grey for inspiration. Taking the heavy, industrial stylings of Godflesh and Techno Animal, dark dubstep vibes and, in the case of 'In Binary' and 'The Heat Death Of Everything; some prime avant-doom, London-based Matthew Rozeik and Al Cookson devise a densely packed, diverse collection with no shortage of ideas. Necro Deathmort pull all the punches here and in the process mark the arrival of a new force to be reckoned with."

"Imagine Trent Reznor producing Sunn O))) and you’ll have a pretty good idea of how this one sounds"

"Necro Deathmort have upped the ante on their second bite at musically expressing torment. ‘Music of Bleak Origin' is heavier, darker, deeper and more poignant than ‘This Beat is Necrotronic' and carries the notion that a huge amount of craft has gone into the selection of sounds in building this barren depression. This is not a piece to be enjoyed track by track, rather, each of the nine cists merges to form one full length cancer of gritty, underground electric mire, and with their live show the two-piece enhance this to spectacular effect with a full smoke and light show. With a band name which could otherwise read ‘Death Death Death', NDM can use whatever instrumental medium at their disposal, in any setting and with any company to sound truly grim. The future here, it seems, is gloriously bleak."

"Ultimately the name Necro Deathmort deserves to be on your lips if you have any interest at all in experimental, ambient metal. If the names Axis of Perdition, Ulver or Lustmord mean anything to you, then this mix of the subtle and the extreme, the sublime and the physically repellent, will undoubtedly provide you with a new soundtrack to your nightmares. Moreover the art and care that has gone into the overall package means that this is a body of work that has to be appreciated as a whole – indeed the best way to appreciate this album is to spend the first track looking in awe at the poster-booklet and then to switch off the lights and let the music flow over you. Disturbing and soothing in equal measure, this is a quite remarkable release."

'A World Lit Only By Fire' is an angry and gloomy motherfucker. From the start, you're being battered with pummeling, gritty low end, piercing dissonance and industrial cold. It paints a dystopian picture in my mind - of bulldozers slowly crawling through a wasteland and people hiding in sheer panic, hungry and desperate for a glimpse of hope. But in 'A World Lit Only By Fire', there is no such thing. Simon Sludge

All of this apologetic wrist wringing of the vocals is extremely lame. They are awesome. That said, I am a fan of Unsane, Drive Like Jehu, Barkmarket, and Big Black. Strong release. Brien Hindman

Jordan Vauvert
